Omega-3s support our Aging Population

Nutrition is one of the major determinants of successful aging. Proper diet can support maintenance of mental and physical function as we age, which provides greater independence and improved quality of life. The physiological and functional changes that occur with age result in changes in nutrient needs. It is becoming increasingly evident that Omega-3 fatty acids are typically below optimal levels in aging populations. When provided in appropriate dosage, Omega-3 supplementation can greatly influence cognition and other health parameters over time.

DHA, a specific type of Omega-3 fatty acid, is represented in high amounts in the brain and is considered to be necessary for normal brain function. It has already been determined that Omega-3 levels are significantly decreased in patients who are affected by age related cognitive decline and that subjects with a low Omega-3 index are at a significantly higher risk for cognitive impairment.

Studies have shown that Omega-3 supplementation in older adults may improve memory, verbal fluency and learning ability. Several observational studies support these findings demonstrating clear associations between fish oil intake and better cognitive aging. Furthermore, research has observed improvements in depression, self-reported mental and physical health issues health with Omega-3 supplementation in aging populations. Omega-3s have been found to better maintain brain volume in aging adults as well, better protecting the tissue from the natural loss that occurs as we get older.

Age can also influence physical health related to loss of muscle mass and function. Due to several changes in the aging body, there can be a progressive loss of muscle mass of approximately 1%-2% per year after the age of 50. With this loss of muscle comes a loss in strength which may lead to immobility or increased risk for falls. Studies have determined that Omega-3 supplementation can stimulate muscle protein synthesis in older adults and reported higher bone mineral density with higher intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. Supporting brain health, maintaining muscle mass and bone mineral density with Omega-3 supplementation can have a very positive impact on overall independence and quality of life as we age.

Brain Armor Super Omega-3+ Liquid Concentrate for Adults 50+ has everything the aging brain needs to maintain high quality structure and function. This supplement contains sufficient amounts of DHA and EPA to support aging brains, along with other powerful nutrients that are required for optimal brain health. Low Vitamin D levels have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. It has been observed that cognitive impairment was up to four times greater in older individuals who were Vitamin D deficient compared to those with adequate levels. Vitamin E has also been found to influence cognition as a free radical fighting antioxidant that protects the brain cells from oxidative damage. All of these vital cognitive nutrients are included in a blend fit for those wiser brains looking for some extra support. Start supporting your brain today to stay on top of tomorrow.
