There are actually 11 different types of Omega-3 fatty acids. The three most important ones are ALA, EPA and DHA.
ALA is short for alpha-linolenic acid and it is the most common omega-3 fatty acid in the diet. ALA is mostly found in plant foods like flax seed, and needs to be converted into the EPA or DHA before it can be utilized by the human body.
EPA is short for eicosapentaenoic acid, it has been found to help fight inflammation in the body.*
DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid, it has been found to support cognitive, visual and cardiovascular health.* DHA is found in every cell throughout the body but is particularly concentrated in the brain and retina of the eyes.
The majority of clinical research suggest that DHA is the most important Omega-3 to support cognitive health. This is why we focus on delivering the highest load of DHA possible. Studies also indicate that DHA will re-convert to EPA in the body at a rate of approximately 7.4%-11.5%. These studies would indicate that DHA supplementation alone may increase blood and tissue levels of both EPA and DHA**
